Bu Pa, Mama!

Dear Jojo,

My attempts of killing + removing one giant cockroach from our bathroom wall were foiled due to my… “girly-ness.” After going through the effort of fastening my slipper to an extended handle and then taping some paper over my slipper (so I don’t get cockroach guts all over the sole) I missed and was too slow to whack the poor thing. It started to fly, shortly followed by me letting out some kind of girly sound – you know, the one we all make when roaches fly, and then landed by the side of our sink.

Then, in the 1/2 second that I tried to get ahold of myself (for a possible 2nd attempt) I heard you from where you stood watching right behind me the whole time, you called out “不怕Mama!”

Translation: Don’t be afraid Mama!

Baby Jojo, you are too funny!

Dear baby

My Little Joujou,
You are so amazing. From the moment you entered the world you amazed me with the most magnificent cry I ever heard. For the next two days, all the doctors and nurses that came around commented on what a strong pair of lungs you had (in other words, you were LOUD!) There was even one nurse who remembered you from the nursery because of your powerful voice.
You opened your eyes immediately and then at four days you were able to lift up your head. I enjoyed many naps with you resting on my tummy. One of my favorite parts of the day is putting you to bed at night. When you laugh, the whole world is laughing with you :)
Now, you’re running around on your own, sometimes refusing to hold my hand! You sing and you dance. You’re favorite tv shows are Wonder Pets and Yo Gabba Gabba. You laugh whenever you see the DJ Lance Rock or Muno. Yes, I know all the names of the characters and the theme songs.
You love dogs and going up and down stairs. You love to sing “Mei mei mei mei” (a Chinese song) and “E i e i o” from “Old Mac Donald.” You love bringing me books to read, especially ones of Baby faces. You’re favorite book is Baby Talk, with the flaps, soon to be replaced by Alphabugs, the pop-up.
Today, you saw your photo on my computer and you pointed at it and said “Baby!” I love your chubby cheeks and when you grab my head to give me a hug. I love holding you, but you’re getting heavy now. You love it when I go “A-Jo a-Jo a-Jo” and go in to give you a kiss really fast. And I love it when you go “Ai Ai Ai!” to tell me to do it again.

Joujou, you are amazing and you make me smile every day :)

The Good ol’ Days

When Shiao Jo was born I was too stressed out to really enjoy being a new mommy. “Kids grow up so fast,” you only get to realize that when you actually have them. When they hit 3 months, they’re considered infants… they’re not even “babies” anymore! Whaaa…?

When I finally started to feel like I was getting the hang of things Jojo was already 6 months or so. I felt like I had missed her entire babyhood. When Jojo was born, I felt like those moms with 6 mo old babies had everything down. They knew what they were doing. Eh, maybe. When Jojo hit 6 months I was more  like “I got this… right?”

My message to all those new moms, whether you planned your pregnancy or not: Stress not! It’ll come to you. ENJOY your baby. CHERISH the small details, those small moments. That first smile, first laugh, nap times together, first time gripping your finger – babyhood is a short, short period, it won’t last forever.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from when Shiao Jo was still a “baby.”

Aye aye Cap’n!

According to the gramps, Shiao Jo was giving out orders at bath time today. “AAADADADADADAAAAY!” and “AAHYAYAYAAY” came out as they prepared everything for the bath. I can imagine her pointing her finger in the air as she gave out the commands:
Fill the tub!
Get my towel!
Test the water temperature!
PJs on the bed!
Rubber duckies!

When she wants to take you somewhere she not only points in that direction, but she’ll thrust her arm, pointer finger out – Go THERE. NOW. It’s hilarious! I can see her giving out directions with the same amount of conviction.
